Concentration and Performance — What EDP Actually Means

EDP, EDT, extrait — most people understand these as a quality hierarchy: extrait is the best, EDT is the weakest. This is wrong. They are concentration designations, not quality rankings. Higher concentration changes how a formula performs. It does not automatically make it better.

Fragrance concentration refers to the percentage of aromatic material — the perfume oil — in the final formula relative to the alcohol carrier.

Eau de Cologne contains 3–5% aromatic material.

Eau de Toilette contains 4–8%.

Eau de Parfum contains 15–18%.

Extrait de Parfum contains 15–30%.

The alcohol percentage and grade varies accordingly. Higher concentration means more aromatic material per application, which generally produces greater longevity and closer sillage — the formula is richer and more present on the skin, and it depletes more slowly because there is more material available to evaporate. However, higher concentration also means the formula is heavier, projects less freely into the air, and can overwhelm in contexts where a lighter presence would be appropriate. An EDT formula is not a lesser version of the same formula at EDP concentration — it is a different performance instrument. The lighter concentration produces freer projection and a faster evaporation curve. The heavier concentration produces greater longevity and skin presence.

THE INSIGHT

The EDP concentration is the professional standard for a formula designed to perform across a full working day in a temperate climate. At 15–18% aromatic material in 80–85% alcohol, an EDP delivers longevity of 6–10 hours on most skin types, moderate sillage with good projection in the first 2 hours and a skin-close presence in the base note hours. This is why all edpclub formulas are produced at EDP concentration. It is not a prestige decision — it is a performance specification. The concentration is chosen because it is the correct specification for a formula designed to perform through the full three-act evaporation curve in the conditions in which it will typically be worn.

When comparing formulas across concentrations, do not assume the higher concentration is the superior product. Assess the formula at the concentration at which it is designed to be worn and evaluate its performance on your skin chemistry over a minimum of 4 hours. A well-constructed EDP at 15–18% aromatic material will outperform a poorly constructed extrait at 25% because the concentration multiplies the quality of the formula beneath it — it does not substitute for it.
